TELEPORT SHIELDS ON LANDING PADS

by Hazed

I need to explain to planet owners the consequences of putting a teleport shield on your landing pad, because it's not totally obvious - in fact, I didn't realize the implications of it myself until after last week's Star had been published.

First, there is no way to stop people from teleporting to your planet. Well, you can stop individuals by exiling them, and you can stop everybody by closing the system link, but that's a bit drastic since it also stops people from flying in! But otherwise, you can't close a planet off to teleporters. Putting a shield on the LP doesn't stop anyone from porting in.

You can, of course, stop people from being able to port anywhere else on your planet by putting a shield on all the other locations.

A shield on the LP may not stop people teleporting in, but it will stop them from teleporting out from that location. That can be both a shock and an annoyance to a visitors, so you need to think carefully before putting a teleport shield on your LP. If you have put a shield up without realizing the implications, you should probably take it down now, or you may find that you are discouraging visitors, to the detriment of your economy.

So teleporters, if you get cross when you discover you can't port off a planet, take it up with the PO - or avoid that world in future!
