REAL LIFE NEWS: LAPTOP THEFT SUSPECT CAUGHT BY REMOTE

by Hazed

When Jose Caceres left his laptop on the roof of his car while carrying goods into his home in White Plains, NY, it got swiped. Well, it was careless of him to leave it out as a temptation to the light-fingered!

At first he resigned himself to never seeing again, but then he realized he could use remote access software to track down the miscreant. It didn't work for the first few days, because although he could see what the thief was doing with the computer, all he was doing was watching porn - so there was no way to get any information about him.

However, Caceres finally hit paydirt when the light-fingered porn fan registered on a website, using his name and address. Caceres passed the details to the cops and the suspect was cuffed a few hours later. He turned out to be Garbriel Meija, 34 years old, and he now faces charges of "fourth-degree grand larceny" for having swiped the laptop.

There are a variety of anti-theft software packages that track the IP addresses of PCs in the event they get stolen and either report back to you, or allow you to watch what somebody is doing on the PC. Clearly it would be a good idea to install something like this just in case - maybe Government departments who are always leaving notebooks on trains or in cafes should look into it!
