You might think that science fiction is a modern invention. After all, it's concerned with future technology, and without some kind of present-day technology to build on, how could any writer possibly imagine what might happen up ahead?

You must have heard of H G Wells, who is generally considered the first science fiction writer, but actually, if you look back a lot further, you can find the kind of visionary writers who look to the future and whose imaginations take them to strange and wonderful worlds.
