REAL LIFE NEWS: TEDDY BEAR COP

by Hazed

If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise, goes the song*. And if you plan to steal from someone who is protected by a teddy bear, you'd better go in disguise! That's what a health service care assistant discovered recently when she stole from a dying granny but was nicked by an electronically enhanced teddy bear.

Yvonne Allen, a 27-year old from Liverpool, was in court last week having admitted two counts of theft. Her crime was to take £60 from the handbag of Thelma Sampson, who is dying of cancer. After Thelma reported to her granddaughter Emma that forty quid had gone missing, the young Sampson rigged up a surveillance sting in which a teddy bear's eyeball was replaced by a tiny security camera. How very James Bond! Meanwhile, the serial numbers of the remaining money in Thelma's purse were recorded.

The carer, who had been brought in to help with looking after Thelma because she has end-stage leukemia, proved to be greedy and helped herself once again from the handbag, this time taking £20. Teddy recorded it all, and Emma called in the police and showed them the footage. They arrested Allen after checking the serial numbers on money in her possession and she has now been sentenced to six months in jail, and she's lost her job with Liverpool Primary Care Trust Provider Services.

Oh, and she has agreed to pay back the stolen money.
