PICTURE OF THE WEEK: MARTIAN ICE

by Hazed

One of the reasons the Phoenix lander was sent to Mars was to see if there was water (in the form of ice) under the surface of the polar region where it has set up camp. Now, the first evidence is in that yes - there's ice under the soil. Here are two pictures, taken a few days apart, which show some lumps which Phoenix dug up and which then vanished - melted away. Take a look at http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap080621.html.

Of course, we all know there's ice on Mars - how else do Diesel's waitdroids serve cold drinks?
