REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU ALCOHOL WAS GOOD FOR YOU, PART 4,396

by Hazed

I only have to print the headline from this story and you will get the gist of it right away, and join me in cheering: Doctors save map with vodka drip.

The man was an Italian tourist, and the doctors were Australians. They kept him alive by feeding him vodka through a drip for three days, after he attempted suicide by swallowing a poison. The antidote to the poison is alcohol and doctors usually use medicinal alcohol - but they'd run out so substituted vodka!

The poison was ethylene glycol which is contained in anti-freeze.

"The patient was drip-fed about three standard drinks an hour for three days in the intensive care unit," Dr Todd Fraser said. "Fortunately for him he was in a medically induced coma for a good portion of that. By the time he woke up I think his hangover would have well and truly gone."

The patient made a full recovery, and was discharged after 20 days in hospital.
