REAL LIFE NEWS: THE WORLD'S BIGGEST CAMERA TAKES THE WORLD'S BIGGEST PHOTO

by Hazed

The world's biggest camera has just taken ten days to snap the world's biggest photo. And by big, I really do mean BIG - this picture was three storeys high. The camera itself was actually an aircraft hanger which was converted into a gigantic camera obscura.

A pinhole camera is called that because instead of a lens, a tiny hole can focus light from one side onto a surface on the other, either for immediate viewing or onto photographic paper to create a lasting image. That's exactly the principle used here, except that because of the huge size of the photo, the "pinhole" was a bit larger than normal.

The inside of the hanger was made absolutely dark, and the surface that was intended to become the photo was white fabric doused in light sensitive chemicals. The resulting picture is 31 feet tall and 111 feet wide. It had to be developed in an Olymic-level swimming pool with 600 gallons of developer.

his ginormous photo will be on display at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, from September 6 to 29.
