FED PHRASE GAME ROADSHOW

Wednesday 11 July
by Gwaptiva

The Roadshow set up the Wheel in the Morph Bar on Phobos this week. Joining the host were Korak, Devildog and Stormbringer, two of whom had not played the Phrase Game before. But both turned out to be right clever and it didn't take long to explain the rules. The order of play was decided and Devildog would go first, but his attempt at deciphering a three-word phrase in the category Places stalled at his first guess of a letter. Korak did a little better, revealing the S, N and R, but then wanted the absent M. Stormbringer then discovered the curse of spinning 1000, because he joined the long list of those who couldn't guess a letter after spinning such a massive total. Devildog found his first letter, but left it at that, and then Korak took the game by the scruff of the neck and guessed and gambled his way to the correct solution: Woodspring Ship Auctions.

With a healthy lead of 2850 points, Korak set about solving the second phrase. Famous People was the category for this phrase of four words and he got off to a good start, finding a whole bunch of letters. He did manage to beat the curse of the 1000 once, but when he spun the top number for the second time it spelled the end of his turn. Neither Stormbringer nor Devildog could contribute anything, so a relieved Korak could go on where he had left off. On his third spin of 1000 he guessed the X, but the letter that is usually chosen in an act of desperation was this time properly chosen. This time it did appear in the phrase, but it didn't help Korak find the solution as he also found the Lose a Turn. Stormbringer had no such problems and solved that the famous "person" was Star Newsdroid Dot Matrix, scoring his first 1000 points.

The third and final puzzle consisted of a four-word phrase in that perennial fan favorite of categories: Fed Songs. Stormbringer, only 1850 points behind leader Korak, started off asking for a letter that wasn't in the phrase, and Devildog discovered the Lose a Turn field on the wheel. Korak did find some success, revealing the N and the S, but the R wasn't there so Stormbringer could begin the race to catch up. This turned out to be a round in which each player guesses something then misses on the next attempt, but inch by inch, Stormbringer clawed his way back towards Korak's total. With Devildog dropping out, it became a straight head-to-head between the two, with the wheel a disruptive third. With the wheel having shown no hesitation to put paid to those trying to challenge it, Stormbringer solved the phrase as Venus by Shocking Blue.

This meant that the game was tied and considering the way it had gone this seemed an appropriate way to end the game. Both on 2850 points. Devildog tried valiantly but it just wasn't his week. Maybe he will do better next Wednesday at 4.00pm eastern as we play another Fed Phrase Game as the Roadshow travels to somewhere in Sol.
