ADVENTURERS GET A REPRIEVE

by Hazed

Ever since Armstrong Cuthbert started hiring selected haulers as special bonded couriers, the staff at the offices have had to put up with incessant whingeing from Adventurers. Whenever one of them pops into a branch of the Galaxy-wide company to get another job, they complain about how hard the jobs are, and how overworked they are, and how it's not fair that they should be obliged to work for so long before they can move on to the next rank.

To which anybody who works for Armstrong Cuthbert replies, don't blame me - it's the Trading Guild who decide on their membership requirements, not us.

Finally, the bosses at Armstrong Cuthbert got so sick of the constant barrage of moans and complaints, that they decided to talk to the Trading Guild about it. Much to everybody's surprise, the Guild functionary they spoke to was sympathetic to their representation and agreed to consider a change to the number of AK jobs required before membership in the Guild would be considered. (We have heard rumors that this swift acquiescence may have been prompted by the existence of incriminating photographs showing the functionary in bizarre activities that he would rather did not become public knowledge.)

Normally, the wheels of bureaucracies grind exceedingly slow, but in this case a decision was swiftly made in the highest echelons of the Guild, and the following announcement was made yesterday:

Henceforth the required number of AK jobs has been considerably reduced, from 500 to just 200.

You probably imagine that this news was greeted with delight throughout the Galaxy. Well... not quite. Of course, Adventurers were pleased not to have to do so many jobs. Unless they had already completed in excess of 200, in which case they are now grumbling that the change should have been made sooner, before they had done more jobs than are now necessary.

Merchants and higher are also furious. Forgetting how they bitched and whined about having to do all those damn AK jobs, they are now angry that future Adventurers will be getting an easy ride. After all, if they had to suffer and do so many (barefoot, uphill, in the methane snow...) why should the future generations not be forced to do likewise?

Which just goes to show that not only can you not please all of the people all of the time, you can't please most of the people at all, ever!
