REAL LIFE NEWS: CHIPPING THE FISH

by Hazed

Singapore's Underwater World has installed a kind of fishy big brother system. It has tagged some of its fish with an RFID chip, so that should they try to escape they can be tracked down ruthlessly and recaptured before being punished for their temerity...

No, of course not. It's to help visitors find out about the fish. When one of the 20 chipped fish swims past a sensor, its name, species and related info is displayed on a screen. Peter Chew, who is the aquarium's sales and marketing manager, said of the new system - which cost $19,600 - "Gone are the days when visitors are happy looking at animals and matching them with the information on the sign boards."

He noted that the aquarium is considering tagging sharks, too. Now that's a job I would not want to have!
