HOW MUCH DO YOUR PEOPLE LOVE YOU?

by Hazed

We all know what happens when you ignore the wants and needs of your citizens - unhappiness leads to disaffection, disaffection leads to rioting, and rioting leads to catastrophic destruction of property. But what happens if you keep disaffection at bay? What if you do more than just keep the grumbling to a minimum - what's the opposite of disaffection?

The answer is: Approval. In effect, it's negative disaffection. It means your populace is more or less happy with the way you are running the planet. They may even have some affection for you.

If you have a disaffection level of zero, that translates to a satisfactory approval rating, and that's what will show on your planet display from now on.

Do enough infrastructure builds to make your people even happier and you are, in effect, setting your disaffection to a negative number, and that means a positive approval rating; -5% dis means +5% approval. It's nice to be loved!

Now, it may give you a warm and fuzzy feeling to know that your people hold you in great affection, but what good is it? Why bother to increase your approval rating? Because it acts as a buffer against sudden reversals of fortune, particularly those caused by the vagaries of factories which can sudden throw all the workthings out on the street with no warning.

Ensure you have a positive approval rating, and if a factory suddenly stops running you won't be at risk of riots.

See, it's worth giving your citizens the bread and circuses they crave!
