PLANET TREASURY LIMIT

by Hazed

The Galactic Administration likes to keep tight controls on the money supply in Fed2 DataSpace, with the spectre of the rampant inflation the Galaxy has suffered in the past something they are very keen to avoid. To that end, the taxman has been empowered to ruthlessly tax those who earn too much, and until now that has prevented anybody from building up vast personal fortunes.

The taxman has not bothered to tax planet treasuries because in general, POs have plenty of things to spend their money on: namely, infrastructure builds. At 10 meg a go, they eat up the planet's profits quite fast, so there haven't been any of those great big heaps of groats that used to cause inflation in the past.

Except that there's always somebody who wants to be different, and now one PO has decided not to do any builds, but to sit on his cash and watch it grow, just so he could get into the Hall of Fame (and Shame) for having the most cash in the history of the Galaxy. And he did.

He also incurred the wrath of his citizens, who had been getting increasingly annoyed at his failure to spend the money which they were generating on improvements to the planet. Finally, they couldn't take it any more, and they rioted and stole all his money. They also stole or damaged a load of other stuff, leaving him with a massive debt. From being the richest to the poorest: he ended up with a planetary treasury of -2,143,923,814ig. I guess that makes him a double record-breaker!

A complicated deal has now been done between the PO in question, the GA, and the insurance company, to give him back most of his missing money. However, to stave off any further riots of this nature, the taxman has been instructed to keep an eye on planet treasuries and confiscate any excess groats. The limit has been set at 2 gigagroats for now, but in two weeks time it will be reduced to 1 gigagroat, so if you have more than that in your treasury, you'd better start building or you will lose it!
