A FEW TIPS FOR STARING OUT YOUR CAREER

by Medrwyn

I would like to offer a few things that I learned as a first time visitor to the Federation family. I didn't have the luxury of playing the original Fed, so the things that I will be talking about will be viewed through the eyes of someone that just experienced the same things that this article is meant to help. I want to first say that the Galaxy of Federation is full of a lot of helpful people and they will be a great asset to draw on for support. The things that I suggest are just that, suggestions, please feel free to tailor them to fit your needs.

You will start out broke, confused and alone on Earth in the beginning, and the manual gives you a lot of advice on getting started, but I would add just go walk around and get familiar with as much as possible on Earth, its probably the most developed planet in the Sol system. If your using FedTerm you will be ahead of the curve thanks to the auto mapping feature. Make sure you can see the very bottom of the Fed Term screen, you can see room names and a lot of other good information at the bottom, but I noticed my taskbar covered it up at first.

I can't stress enough how important it is to read the online manual and get an idea of how the basic stuff works, but like me I am sure you will jump in with both feet and read later, so take advantage of the great Help files that are available in game. You can always use the Com command to talk to everyone that is here, just saying Hello can get you a long way I have found. If you need a nudge in the right direction, you can usually ask and get a prompt response, but rarely will anyone say "do this, do that," it's normally just a suggestion that will lead you to what you need. Private talk is done with TB command, and there are helps that go more into the exact wording to make these things happen.

After you get your ship, and are ready to haul freight, I would suggest having a copy of the Sol Space map in front of you, and in a separate window have the Fed homepage so that you can quickly get to the great starter maps for each planet - these will give you the location of each Armstrong Cutthroat office, AC for short.

I didn't explore any place else on the other planets at this point, so with the auto-mapping feature I was able to retrace my steps when I went to each planet.

As far as the freight goes, I would turn on the updates for the listing of freight, and be willing to run late, and void the run you're on, if you see a job that pays you more than the normal 2 hc. Making money isn't the real goal at this point, even though you're in debt up to your eyes to start.

Lastly I would like to encourage you to get involved with the people of Fed, most here have been nothing but nice and the Staff have a wide selection of events that they run and they always announce them over the Com. This world isn't so much about racing from level to level as much as about experiencing each level fully, and with the limits they set you have no choice but to experience it fully. Remember to look into the quest that is mentioned in the manual, its well worth it, and best of luck.
