ON THE WEB: THE VANISHING FACE ON MARS

The Mars Express has taken some pictures of the Cydonia region on Mars, which show in a great deal of detail what is there - and, more to the point, what's not. You may recall that previous photos of this area have shown markings that some interpreted as a face, but the new pictures, which are in a much greater resolution, show that it was just a trick of the light and shadow, the angle the pic was taken from, and the poor resolution which caused the optical illusion.

Never mind speculation about faces, I find the detail in the new photos absolutely fascinating. We're seeing the surface of another planet as we've never seen it before. That's awesome!
