FROM THE POSTBAG: THIS IS NOT CLASSIC FED

Sometimes we get asked questions where the same answer has to be given over and over, until we wish we had a recording we could just play to save our collective breaths. No, we're not talking about newbod questions - of course, they always ask the same things so we have to give the same answers. We're talking about questions from players higher up the ranks - CEOs or POs. Their questions may be different, and the specifics of the answers may vary, but the phrase we keep on using over and again is:

"This is not classic Fed"

Typically the questioner will ask for clarification about how something works - which is fair enough; sometimes the very wonderful Idiot's Guide to Fed2 doesn't explain all the nuts and bolts of how things work, but leaves players to figure it out for themselves or be taught by other players - but will then add that their theory about how it works is such-and-so because "that's how it was in classic Fed". Here's an example:

"Do social builds cost the same as other builds? Because in Classic Fed they were free to add"

The answer is, of course, that all builds cost 10 meg, and that "this is not classic Fed".

In another recent example, a PO was bemoaning the fact that he couldn't seem to make his world make a profit despite spending all his time filling deficits. He wanted to know what he was doing wrong, because that strategy had worked fine on classic Fed. I had to explain - yet again - that strategies that worked on classic Fed should be junked and new ones evolved to take account of how things work now because "this is not classic Fed".

It is early days for planet owners in Fed2, so POs are still working out the correct strategies to use to run a profitable planet. Until all the code is in that will affect planetary economies, it's not going to be possible to formulate neat little rules and strategies that will guarantee a healthy treasury. In the meantime, don't be tempted to use old methods from the previous version of the game... remember, "this is not classic Fed!"
