WE MADE IT!

With a minimum of fuss and scarcely any panic, Fed2 moved to its new home last weekend. At the Sunday reset, the final backups were taken from the old server and transferred to the new server. This left the game in unsaved mode on the old machine, where nothing you did was saved. Players took advantage of this consequence-free time to explore all the dangerous areas of the game they usually avoid, and find out just what does happen if you walk through those doors on Titan. However, some discovered that the no-consequences rule did not apply to behavior and ended up being locked out of the old version!

Meanwhile, the new server (called Serenity) was fired up with the copied data, so those logging onto Serenity Fed could carry on as normal.

Of course, this should have come as no surprise to anyone, because it was all detailed in last week's Fed2 Star, but much to my amazement it turns out there's quite a few people who don't read the news, and so had no idea what was going on! We kept staff posted in the old version of the game to warn people and steer them over to the new server, and by Tuesday, when we switched off the old machines, just about everyone had got the message.

At that point we switched over the addressing information, so the usual address of fed2.ibgames.net pointed to the new server rather than the old. Since it can take ISPs a few days to catch up with this kind of address change, some players found they had to continue to use the temporary address, or even the numeric IP address, but by now everyone should be able to revert to the usual address.

Once again, huge thanks to everybody who helped make this move as painless as possible: Freya, who co-ordinated everything, Steve Stogner at Net Access, Nightdroid, and all the Fed2 staff.
