IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MOVING FED2 TO ITS NEW HOME

Last week I warned you that we planned to move Fed2 to its new server shortly. Yesterday, the timetable was set, and an email sent out to the Fed2 Star mailing list, so many of you will already know what's going to happen. But just to make sure, here's the information all over again.

At the reset today (that's Sunday June 25) the game was held down longer than usual so Alan could take a final backup of the persona file and all the other game files. This complete backup was the version transferred to the new server, so when the game came up again after the reset, it was in "unsaved" mode. That means that nothing you do in that version of Fed2 will be saved permanently, or transferred over to the new server.

This is a perfect excuse for a wild party, and a chance for you to try out all the ways to die in Sol that you never dared to look at!

At this point, you have a choice of which version of Fed2 you play. At the moment, logging on to fed2.ibgames.net - the default for FedTerm - will get you into the old, unsaved version.

Now that the complete backup has been moved over to its new home, you can log on to this version by pointing your front-end to the temporary address for the new server: serenity.ibgames.com. The things you do on the new version will be saved as usual, unless anything goes wrong - which we hope it won't!

This afternoon, we will change the DNS addresses so that the name federation.ibgames.net points to the new server instead of the old. However, it sometimes takes ISPs a day or so to catch up with this kind of change, so you may need to continue to use the temporary system name for a while.

The old version of Fed2 will be closed down permanently at the reset on Tuesday morning, wiping out all the things you did in that particular DataSpace between now and then. Apart from the memory of all your embarrassing indiscretions, of course...

Note that this timetable relies on everything going smoothly - if we run into any problems then we're going to have to delay things, in which case we will email this mailing list again to let you know.

Many thanks to Freya for co-ordinating all the details involved in this move, to Steve Stogner, the engineer at nac.net, for assistance above and beyond the call of duty, to Nightdroid for checking that we hadn't missed anything, and to the Fed2 staff for all their hard work testing the new server. And especially to everyone involved for putting up with Bella's grouchiness!
