R.I.P. CLASSIC FED

We regret to announce that classic Fed has finally died. Ever since we started up Fed2, we've said that we'd keep classic Fed running as long as the hardware held out. Well, now the hardware has failed, and none of the usual tricks (rebooting the machine, taking the hard drive out and hitting it) have worked. It's not possible to port it to another machine - that, after all, is why we embarked on the project of a complete rewrite in the first place. So we just have to accept that it's dead, Jim.

For those who have been using classic Fed and have an active subscription to the game, we offer you a choice. If you have a copy of your classic Fed planet, then we'll add it to Fed2 for you, if you keep your subscription going.

Here's how that will work. You will need to recreate your classic Fed planet using the Fed2 Workbench - we can't just port the files over, they are in a completely different format. Then set up a new character who will own the planet, and email us the planet files. Because being a planet-owner is not directly linked to rank in Fed2, it is possible to own a planet even if you are a groundhog! Of course, you won't be able to visit it, so we'll also give your new character enough groats to become a Captain. If you want to advance any further, you'll be on your own.

Because you can't actually control the economy of a planet until you are a Founder, when the planet goes in it will not have an exchange, so it won't generate jobs or futures, or allow trading. If you do advance the character to Founder then an exchange can be added so the planet becomes a fully functional world.

If you want to do this, then you should:

1) Set up a groundhog character, and go buy a ship.

2) Recreate your planet in the Fed2 Workbench.

3) Email the files to fi.ibgames@googlemail.com, giving your classic Fed character name and the new Fed2 character name.

Alternatively, you can email me and request that your subscription be cancelled.
