MARTIAN LIGHTS CEASE WITH NO WARNING

All week, the skies above Mars have been lit up by the most incredible displays. The green lights were nicknamed the Martian Lights, and have attracted hordes of sight-seers, who flocked to the planet to watch.

And now, the lights which appeared so mysteriously have just as suddenly stopped, leaving astronomers completely baffled. Those who attended yesterday's April Fool's Day party said that the lights were still visible throughout the party - although funnily enough they all refused to speculate on the cause of the lights, and most rushed off claiming they had other business as soon as we asked them what they thought was going on.

We asked a Galactic Administration spokesthing for the official position on this strange phenomenon. It gave us a long and complex statement that was so full of long words and meandering sentences that we had trouble understanding it; when we submitted it to a semantic expert for analysis, it turned out that the statement said that the GA had no idea at all what was going on! No change there, then.

The Fed II Star offices received the usual crank calls from people claiming to know what was going on. These ranged from the slightly silly: "the lights are caused by secret government weapons tests", through the ridiculous: "the ancient machinery in the ruins has been activated and the whole planet is going to explode", right up to the downright crazy: "the lights herald the second coming of Gaelaan who will lead all his followers to a technological paradise"!

But in the absence of any answers from the people who really should know - the Imperial Navy, who are keeping quiet about what they have discovered about the Martian lights, if anything - we will just have to shrug and assume it's just one of those things that will never be explained.
