CRYPTOGRAMS

Saturday January 28
by Catspaws

Food does not always make the perfect eatery. Sometimes entertainment value is just as important. Such was the case this week, as I had heard there were lots of crawling creatures for kitties to chase in the Sierpinsky Lounge on Silk. Hence, this week's game moved to that location, which lived up to its reputation for both entertainment, and for food - if you like eating centipedes.

Being in a good mood this week, I kept the puzzles relatively simple. As a result, Fancy finished each puzzle first, for a perfect score of 15. Quick, let's see a show of hands, paws, or other appendages... who is surprised?

Planets Starting with "M"
Q F S K B S E
Q N S R R A
Q N S D
Q N P F Z Z N A
Q F G N
Q N P S N G X F N

The first puzzle was a good warm-up, with an obvious starting point, as each entry started with the same letter, and Prometheus finished it second, with Guido coming in third.

Commands a Factory Owner Uses
Q H Y
P Z R / N T O D Y J R
C Q / O Y V H T S R
M I G G / N T O D Y J R
Z H K J T C I / N T O D Y J R
N G Z M A / N T O D Y J R

For me, a good starting point for this one was the three-letter command - there's only one. It's also a tricky one, as you only use it one time, and technically, you use it while still a trader. Guido finished this puzzle second, followed by Robius, the towel merchant.

Regular Cryptogram Players
I D X X O P
R W L K U
A M U E O Q J O W Z
A J O K M O
J U X U M L P
S P X H D

The third puzzle was a tribute to our regular Cryptogram players, and Robius finished second. Prometheus threw out his buggy cryptogram-solving program and finished third.

Places to Live on Phobos
K V M E B ' H / K V H M F N
L V U M E V ' H / U N H Q C N W K N
C D V F / I K K D Y V W K B / D W Q M
V F Q K N / V W C / A I A ' H / Y V C
E I L N / M I / A V H Q F / V W C / E Q H / A D C C Q N H
H Q W R F N / I K K D Y V W K B / D W Q M

Jaymatron arrived in time for the fourth puzzle, missing the first three warm-up puzzles. For those of you who haven't visited Phobos lately, you find all these places when you ride the buggy. The obvious starting point is the apostrophe in the first two entries. Robius came in second this time, and Guido third.

Places to Visit on Silk
E N I D H C I H B F / R L B R V
I N V P C B / T S D H V S G L H S N I / E B C S P D / N J J S E R
B S G V C V F
D S R V W S I D Z F / B N L I M R
J S J H Q / G V S T M R
D W C E R G B N N P / E N I D R V Y C H N V F

In honor of the planet itself, the final puzzle was a tribute to Silk. The only obvious starting point is that I used the Lounge itself in the list. Guido finished second, and Robius third.

When the scores were totalled, Prometheus finished third, Guido and Robius finished second, and Fancy finished first. We play Cryptograms every Saturday at 4.00pm eastern. If you would like the answers to this week's puzzles, you can email me at catspaws_fed@sbcglobal.net.
