FEDPARDY

Tuesday January 17
by Fancy-Fancy

Four players joined me in Studio 1 to play tonight's edition of FEDPARDY! Robius, Jessecka, Averatec, and Catspaws all came to play, and Txkipani, Cygnus, and Lynnea tuned in to the channel relay at various times. They players all assured me they were familiar with the rules, so I skipped right to the categories. Tonight we had: Commodities, Planets and their Owners, T-ing Off, and Business & Industry. The players spun the wheel for the chance to select first, and Robius gained that honor. He selected Planets and their Owners for 1 to start, and the game was afoot.

Jessecka scored that first point, and Averatec then got the rest of the category, with Robius missing the 3 and Catspaws the 5 point answer along the way. Averatec then started Commodities with the 1 point answer, which Jessecka got, and then started T-ing Off with the 1. Robius made a run there, collecting the 1 and 2 point answers, then finding the first Daily Double. He decided to make it worth the maximum 5 for the situation, and received this answer:

Looking at these, you see a pair of thick, white cotton socks. You aren't allowed any further inside where you get them until you put them on.

Robius correctly identified them as tabi for 5 points. Averatec rang in and got Robius' subsequent selection of Commodities for 2, bringing us to the half. Averatec led with 16 points to 5 for Robius, 2 for Jessecka, and -5 for Catspaws. That meant Catspaws would get the first selection of Double Fedpardy, as the one trailing everyone else at the half.

Catspaws selected Commodities for 6 to start Double Fedpardy, but nobody tried it. She then found the other Daily Double under the 8, and decided to make it worth as much as she could, which was 10 in her case. And this was the answer she received:

This white metal element has numerous industrial uses, including electroplating, electrical storage, and resistance to rust and tarnish. It was also used in money.

She thought a while, and finally uttered, "What is nickel?" That was correct, digging her out of the hole, and onto the plus side. Robius scored the 10 pointer in Commodities to finish that category, Averatec the 8 in T-ing Off, and then Jessecka the 10 in the same category. The players took Business & Industry in ascending point order with Jessecka collecting the 2 and Robius the 4, with the 6, 8, and 10 point answers getting passed. That brought us to the end of Double Fedpardy. Our scores then read:

Averatec: 24
Robius : 19
Jessecka: 14
Catspaws: 5

Each of them advanced to Final Fedpardy, where they would get a chance to bet as many of those points as each wished. Once they had all placed their wagers and verified they were ready for the Final Fedpardy answer, I revealed it to them and gave them 60 seconds:

Doing this is possible in a familiar location, but the results are considerably different. You get a grumpy clerk griping about Naval Intelligence and how they couldn't keep a secret.

Time expired on Catspaws before she belatedly sent in "what is cheat?", which wasn't correct anyway. Catspaws wagered all 5 of her points, ending up with zero.

Jessecka wrote down, "what is bribe clerk?" for her response. That was incorrect. (Can't imagine how receiving a bribe would make a clerk grumpy) Jessecka wagered all 14 of her points, and ended up with none.

Robius was next up. He put down, "what is board shuttle?" for his response. That wasn't it, either. Robius' wager was 9 points, leaving him with 10.

That brought us to our leader coming in, Averatec. Its response was, "what is Buy Navcomp Software", but that wasn't right, either. The correct response was "What is slide shelves?", where something about the shelves strikes you as odd, but you can't quite place your finger on it. Averatec's wager was 24 points, dropping its points down to zero. That left Robius as tonight's winner with 10 points!

Congratulations to Robius, this week's Fedpardy champion. Thanks also to Averatec, Jessecka, and Catspaws, who tied for runner-up, and to those who tuned in to watch tonight. Join us again in Studio 1 on January 31 at 10.00pm eastern for our next exciting edition of FEDPARDY!

And the Fed Phrase Game will be taking place on the 24th. Join me for that, too.
