ROLE-PLAYING CLASS

Friday January 13
by Catspaws

Every two weeks, we meet in Chez Diesel for a class on role-playing. This class is important, because it keeps the kitty in mice and catnip. This week we had five participants, Robius, Ryuken, Boone, Perseus and Marsspeg.

As this was the first class since the holiday break, and the comms were a hot topic due to increased comms activity over the holidays, the discussion this week was 'The Comms and Role-playing.' For more information on this subject, you can visit the Rules Page.

As pointed out in the class, the comms play an important role in Fed, because of the exposure new players receive. It can be difficult for a new player to learn what they're supposed to do when there is too much comm chatter. So staff members tend to limit role-playing to channels. Staff are truly not trying to be mean and nasty (well, the kitty gets grumpy, but let's not go there).

Several examples were given, but the best one came from Guido, who told of a new player who role-played a character with no appendages and the difficulties he faced trying to figure out how to operate a spaceship. He got so much 'help' over the comms he got frustrated and gave up.

Yes, there are role-players in Fed, and they're often brand new players. It's hard sometimes for older players or for non-roleplayers to know how to assist new players who stay in character.

The last part of the class dealt with a particular role-playing situation I really 'must' detail. It seems Ryuken was in the hot tub on Dryad and Jessecka absconded with his loincloth, so he had to come to class wearing one of Robius' monogramed towels. The plot thickened even further when Robius mentioned Jess had asked him to model a 'new' loincloth. All I can say is, "I want pictures!"

Join me in two weeks for the next class, where we will discuss how moods and descriptions can be one of your most powerful role-playing tools.
