FEDERATION 2 WORKBENCH

SETTING UP A STOCK SYSTEM MANUALLY

If you cannot use the Stock Planet Builder program (which is for Windows computers) then you will have to download the stock planet file you want to use from the list on the right, and then make some changes to the files or they won't load into the game - see below. The stock planet files can be changed using either the Windows or the Mac version of the Workbench.

Each download is a zip file containing four files. For example, the Iceberg download contains:

  • ice.loc - the map for the planet
  • ice.msg - the messages used by the planet map
  • space.loc - the space map
  • space.msg - the messages used by the space map

Changes you must make to a stock system:

1. Decide on the names you want to use for your planet and system name. They must be names that are not already being used for planets or systems in the game. Example: planet Bodville in system Newstar.

2. Rename the planet file so that the filename matches your planet name. For example, if you have downloaded the stock system Furnace, the planet filename is fire.loc so rename it to match your planet name. Example: bodville.loc - all in lower case.

3. Rename the message file so that the filename matches your planet name. Example: bodville.msg - all in lower case.

4. You do not have to rename the space map or the space message file - leave the filenames as space.loc and space.msg.

5. Load the planet map into the location editor from the workbench so you can customize the planet information. The panel on the right of the map shows the map title, which you need to change so it matches the name of your planet. Example: Bodville.

6. Change the orbit loc # entry so it matches the name of your system. For the Fire map, it will say Furnace.Furnace Space.460 - don't change the number, but replace 'Furnace.Furnace' with your system name. Example: Newstar.Newstar Space.460.

7. Save the planet map and then load in the space map. The map title will show the system name, which you should change so it includes your system name. Example: Newstar Space.

8. Save the space map.

Can't make changes?
